30 May 2025 – Mapúa Malayan Colleges Laguna (Mapúa MCL) has taken a bold step in advancing sustainability by partnering with ACEN Renewable Energy Solutions (ACEN RES) to transition its Cabuyao, Laguna campus to 100% renewable energy.
The shift was enabled through the Department of Energy’s Green Energy Option Program (GEOP), which allows qualified electricity consumers to select a renewable energy supplier. With this move, Mapúa MCL is now avoiding approximately 91 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in emissions each month.
To honor Mapúa MCL’s commitment to long-term decarbonization, ACEN RES awarded the institution a gold “Powered by Renewable Energy” badge—its proprietary symbol recognizing organizations that champion renewable energy adoption in the Philippines.
The partnership was marked by a switching ceremony attended by the school’s leadership and student representatives. As part of the celebration, ACEN RES conducted a Renewable Energy 101 learning session designed to deepen students’ understanding of the energy transition and its broader societal impact. The initiative aimed to inspire the next generation of leaders to integrate sustainability into their future decisions and careers.
Engr. Sheila Mina, VP and head of account management at ACEN RES and an alumna of Mapúa University, noted that “Mapúa MCL is not only dedicated to providing quality education but is also committed to safeguarding the future of its students by embracing sustainability through this transition to renewable energy. Thank you, Mapúa, for being part of the solution. You make us proud.”
Mapúa MCL President and CEO Dr. Dodjie S. Maestrecampo emphasized that this transition is a reflection of the school’s longstanding commitment to environmental responsibility. “Mapúa Malayan Colleges Laguna has always been at the forefront of innovation and progress. This partnership with ACEN RES and our shift to 100% renewable energy reflects our unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and our responsibility to future generations. By embracing renewable energy, we are not only reducing our carbon footprint but also setting a powerful example for our students and the wider community. It aligns with our targeted Sustainable Development Goals, specifically SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG 13: Climate Action, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals. We are proud to be a part of this movement towards a more sustainable future for the Philippines.”
